Description: Someone who carried on a business which consisted in or comprised the selling of milk that has been pasteurised, sterilised or ultra heat treated. The milkman delivered milk on a daily basis to local residents. This was frequently done by hand cart but sometimes by a pony drawn cart in towns and cities. Milk bottles were not common-place until after the First World War, instead the milkman carried a metal churn. The milk was laddled from that into jugs brought out by the households.
