Census Occupations - Master Mariner

Description: Someone who was heavily experienced in the craft of sailing, often a Captain or Master of a ship or vessel. A sailor helps to navigate a vessels or assists in their day to day running. They spent extended periods at sea, often working individual trips aboard a ship rather than being tied to only one vessel. Work was often in damp, cold, cramped, noisy, and sometimes dangerous conditions, with sinking, disease, injury or death from falling overboard and from hazards with working with machinery, heavy loads, and dangerous cargo. On top of this, naval battles whether openly or via privateers, and pirates were commonplace.
