Description: Someone who laboured in any trade, taking work where he could. This would mostly have been heavy work such as lifting and carrying, or menial tasks. Labourers generally act as assistants to other trades, e.g. operators or cement masons. A labourer was essentially a casual labourer, and could be employed on a day to day basis. During times of high unemployment many males would try to gain work as a labourer. This was especially the case in urban areas where they would gather at specific points each morning to look for work. They were poorly paid, especially when competition was high, a classic example being the introduction of machinery to the weaving industry when skilled girls would often bring home more income than their fathers.
