Description:Someone who worked, usually on an estate, looking after the lands especially the wildlife. They would ensure there was enough game for shooting, or fish for angling, and actively managed areas of woodland, moorland, waterway or farmland for the benefit of game birds, deer, fish and wildlife in general. A gamekeeper also prevented poaching, and learnt how to rear pheasants and other birds. They often started as beaters flushing out game birds during shoots when young boys. Whilst conditions were often tough out on the estate for long periods of time, gamekeepers often had an estate cottage along with job, as well as being allowed to take the food needed to himself and his family. Many received attacks from poachers and a fair number were shot whilst doing their jobs. Dislocated thumbs were so common that 'gamekeeper's thumb' is a medical term. It was caused by breaking the neck of rabbits that the landowner had shot but not killed.
