Description: Someone who made or repaired wooden structures. Most carpenters were also joiners, adding the finishing touches to anything made from timber. A carpenter was originally someone who made wooden carts, from the Latin carpentum, which literally means a two-wheeled cart. In the 1800s many carpenters emigrated to British colonies. Whilst houses had not commonly been made from wood in England since the 17th century, countries such as America built entirely in wood. Carpenters avoided training all of their sons in the same trade but instead saw that they apprenticed in related trades such as plumbing and roofing. As a result, entire building dynasties could be set up and they became quite wealthy.
