Description: Someone who worked in the farming industry, tending cows in a milk herd. The job of the cowman was secure by the standards of the day due to the necessity of the role and they were also paid better than the average farm labourer. The day began sometime between 4am and 6am by preparing the cow byre in readiness for milking. The cowman, would drive the cows in and often help out with the milking as it was all done by hand. Not until the mid-1900s did the vast majority of farms have milking machines. The cowman then drove the cattle back to the pasture and spend much of the rest of the day preparing food for the herd and feeding them. When finished, the milking shed was once again cleaned and the cows driven back for the evening milking.
