Description: Someone, a child, who was sent up chimney to clear out soot deposits, often forcefully. Although the practice was outlawed by 1832 it was still a common occurrence, with some sweeps being as young as five. The children made their way through the narrow winding chimneys enduring cuts, grazes and bruises until their skin became accustomed to it. If a child refused to go any further, fires were sometimes lit underneath them for 'encouragement'. In addition, thanks to working naked, they were susceptible to scrotal cancer.
