Below are some resources I recommend if any of your ancestors in your family tree were brick makers.

Description: Someone who made bricks. Often located near or next to clay pits, the clay was often dug out by hand and placed into brick moulds. Even a small brickworks had an oven that could hold 30,000 bricks at a time. This would use around 10 tons of coal to fire and therefore needed access (and transport) for large amounts of coal. Bricks were first smoked, normally for about 5 days. This removed the excess water, up to 2lbs from an 11lbs brick, although this depended on the size of the mould of course. Once the water was removed, bricks were fired for 3 days at 950°C. They were then cooled for a further 2 days before being ready. See also Bricklayer.
