Description: Someone who worked with alabaster. This is a fine-grained marble-like type of gypsum, forming a soft, often white, stone. In England is was found in Derbyshire and Somerset and usually worked by local craftsmen. As it was easily weathered, most alabaster was used to make ornaments, vases, sculptures, tombs or statues. Workers would have been exposed to gypsum dust as well as the physical dangers of working with large stone.
