Description: Someone who is an experienced seaman, assisting the officer on watch, steering the ship. A grade above Ordinary seaman, they helped to navigate a vessel or assisted in the day to day running. They spent extended periods at sea, often working individual trips aboard a ship rather than being tied to only one vessel. Work was often in damp, cold, cramped, noisy, and sometimes dangerous conditions, with sinking, disease, injury or death from falling overboard and from hazards with working with machinery, heavy loads, and dangerous cargo. On top of this, naval battles whether openly or via privateers, and pirates were commonplace.
