Description: El-Alamein was one of the most famous battle of the West Desert Campaign, with the first battle taking place 1st-27th June 1942. It halted the German and Italian advance under Erwin Rommel that aimed to take Egypt. The allied force totalled 150,000 and was comprised of British, Australian, Indian, New Zealand and South African men, commanded by Claude Auchinleck. The battle itself was actually a stalemate but was a success from a an allied perspective as it saved Alexandria, Cairo and ultimately the Suez canal too. The allies suffered 13,250 casualties. The second battle of El-Alamein took place between 23rd October-5 November 1942. By this time, the new allied commander was Lieutenant-General Bernard Montgomery and they were ready to take the fight to the axis forces. Montgomery, fielding almost 200,000 men and twice the number of tanks as the German-Italian forces, concluded a successful battle, driving Rommel back and taking Tripoli in Libya. The fighting continued in Tunisia for some time afterwards but it was the beginning of the end for the Axis forces there and allowed the Allies to focus on the invasion of Italy.
