Description: The Dunkirk evacuation, also known as Operation Dynamo, took place May-June 1940 in Northern France. The British Expeditionary Force and their allies had been driven back by the Germans and bottled up at the port of Dunkirk. Desperate to withdraw the troops before the Germans closed in, Winston Churchill asked the British public to sail any and every vessel to France to help evacuate the troops. With only 7000 rescued on the first day, the situation looked grim, but by the 4th June, a total of 338226 soldiers had been removed, of which 198229 were British. It has often been debated as to whether this was a victory or disaster for the allies. Certainly, many of the German High Command, including Admiral Donitz, considered it a failure for the Germans for not acting quickly enough. Regardless of the opinions, the result allowed the allies to re-group and ultimately stage a successful landing on D-Day, leading to the eventual downfall of the German Empire.
