Description: The bombing of Hamburg took place throughout the Second World War. As an industrial city and a port, Hamburg was a natural target, housing shipyards, U-boats and oil refineries. However, it was one of the attacks in July 1943 that caused Hamburg to become synonymous with the carpet bombing of German cities and for which the bombing is most famous. On that night some 50000 civilians were killed and the city was almost completely destroyed, leaving Hamburg a blazing inferno. The allies used techniques to cause the most damage such as circular bombing and adopted bombs such as napalm and phosphorus, bombs which would later be denounced during wars such as Vietnam as barbaric.
