Description: The battle of the Atlantic took place from 1939-1945 and was the ongoing battle between the British and German navies, although allies on both sides also joined in. The main objective of the British was a blockade of Germany, for Germany it was the blockade of Britain. Britain relied heavily on imports and so could not continue in the war without success in this battle. Luckily for them, they won a strategic victory but by 1945 they had lost 3500 merchant ships and 175 naval vessels. The Germans lost 783 U-boats.
