Description: The battle of Britain took place in 1940 and was a solely air-based battle. Following the allied withdrawal from Dunkirk the British were in a weak position. The Germans need only gain air superiority over Britain and they could force surrender or even invade (Operation Sea Lion). They initially targeted shipping and naval bases such as Portsmouth before focusing on airfields and military factories. They would later use terror tactics aimed at reducing morale (the Blitz). The British survived thanks to inventions such as the radar and communication but also thanks to a great deal of individual courage, skill and luck. Not only from those piloting the planes but those on the ground, the air-raid wardens, firefighters, policemen, volunteers, those working in the factories to replace aircraft and provide ammunition and every Briton who was subjected to the bombings. Large sections of cities had to be completely re-built as a result of the attacks - London, Portsmouth, Southampton, Bristol and Coventry to name but a few. The result was an overwhelming victory for the Allies. They lost 544 men with 1547 aircraft destroyed. The Germans lost 2698 men with 1887 aircraft destroyed.
