Description: The first world war (the Great War) was fought between the alliance of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the German Empire, the Ottoman Empire and Kingdom of Bulgaria against an alliance primarily of the British Empire, the Russian Empire and the French Third Republic, Italy, the Japanese Empire and the USA, although many other nations fought or declared war. The war was the result of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria (heir to the throne on Austro-Hungaria) by a Bosnian-Serb nationalist, which in turn triggered a series of alliances, igniting the whole of Europe in war.
