Description: The 1st battle of Ypres was fought between the allied troops of Britain, India, France and Belgium and the German Empire. The battle took place in 19 October-22 November 1914 in Ypres, Belgium, just to the North-East of Lille in France. The allied objective was the hold a defensive line in order to strengthen their position, protect the Channel ports and their supply lines. The two sides dug in for trench warfare, whilst the town of Ypres was demolished by artillery fire and air attacks. Significantly the British suffered losses to their standing army, resulting in mass conscription, also known as 'Kitchener's Army'.
