Description: The battle of the Somme was fought between the German empire and an alliance of France, Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Newfoundland and South Africa forces between July and November 1916. It took place north of the River Somme in northern France, along a front stretching some 12-20 miles (depending on reports, see BBC History, Wikipedia and First World War.com). In part to relieve pressure from the allies at Verdun, the plan was to bombard German trenches for a week and then simply take the trenches. However, the Germans hid underground in concrete bunkers. In addition, much of the ammunition fired never exploded, leaving the Germans to gun down advancing allied troops. On the first day alone, 60000 British troops were killed. By the end of the battle, around 360000 British lay dead. The result was a stalemate with the allies having advanced just 5 miles.
