Description: The battle of Mons took place on 23 August 1914 in southern Belgium between Britain and the German Empire. It was the first major action of the First World War, where the British Expeditionary Force tried to hold the front-line along the Mons-Conde canal against the advancing Germans. The British lost 1638 men during the action compared to 5000 Germans and is considered a successful British holding action, although they ultimately retreated to in the face of superior numbers and the collapse of the French Fifth Army which exposed their right flank.
