Description: The battle of Le Cateau took place on 26 August 1914 in Northern France between British, French and Belgium troops and the German Empire. It followed the battle of Mons, where the allies retreated in the face of overwhelming German numbers. The Germans attacked the defensive line of the allies with heavy artillery fire, resulting in a further allied retreat to Saint-Quentin. The British lost almost 8000 men during the action. Although the German number of dead is not known, it is thought to be very high. The result is considered a success for the allies who held off the advancing Germans and managed to retreat again in good order.
