Description: The Hindenburg Line were a series of German defenses built in 1916-1917 by Russian POWs. It was set-up as a defensive position to fall-back to after the initial battle of the Somme. It reduced the frontline and allowed the Germans to put more troops into this concentrated area. It was heavily fortified. Several battles were fought along these lines during 1917-1918.
