Description: The battle of Festubert was fought between the German empire and an alliance of Britain (including Indian forces) and Canada in May 1915. It took place south of Neuve-Chapelle in the Artois region of France. The battle was part of the French Artois offensive and designed to hold up German reserves preventing them from joining the troops fighting the French at nearby Arras. The artillery bombardment was largely unsuccessful but the first infantry advances were promising. However, subsequent advances resulted in heavy loss and the British eventually dug in at the new front line. The net result was a 1km gain for 16,000 casualties.
