Description: The battle of Doiran was fought between Bulgaria and an alliance of Britain and Greece in September 1918. It took place near Lake Doiran, Macedonia. The allies attacked the Bulgarian positions just above the lake but were driven back time and again, incurring heavy losses. The Bulgarians, who were vastly outnumbered held their positions without much trouble and only retreated when they heard of the advance of the Serbians and French who had defeated the Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian army in the Vardar valley. Despite the retreat, the battle is considered a tactical victory for the Bulgarians, losing only 2,726 in casualties and dead to British number of 3,155 and the Greeks 3,948. Less than 2 weeks later, the Bulgarians had surrendered.
