Description: The battle of Jutland took place 31 May-1 June 1916 in the North Sea near Denmark, between Britain and the German Empire. It was the largest naval action of the First World War. The Germans planned to engage small parts of the British fleet at any one time due to their inferior numbers, whereas the British were on a hunt and destroy mission for the entire German fleet. Ultimately both plans would give them control of the North Sea and allow their merchant ships to sail unmolested. The Germans aimed to lure in part of the British fleet and cut them off but the British had learned off this plan and instead held of the German attack until the main fleet was able to engage them. Whilst the British had superior numbers, they also had poor communications and debate still rages as to whether Admiral John Jellicoe threw away victory by his decisions. The British lost 6094 men during the action, as well as a 14 ships, whilst the Germans lost 2551 men and 11 vessels. The result was inconclusive tactically but the British maintained their naval dominance.
