Description: The battle of Arras took place April-May 1917 in Northern France between the German Empire and British, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand troops. The aim was really to draw German attention away from the planned French attack (the Nivelle Offensive) as well as taking key German postions. Initial gains were amazing, especially when compared with other battles during the war, but the British failed to achieve a major break-through. The battle was generally considered a British victory as they did manage to distract the Germans and allow the French to attack. Unfortunately, the French failed to achieve a success and by the end of the battle the British and their allies had suffered 150000 losses.
