Description: The 3rd battle of Ypres, also known as Passchendaele, was fought between the allied troops of Britain, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South Africa and France and the German Empire. The battle took place in 11 July-10 November 1917 in Belgium. The allied objective was to break the enemy line, thus outflanking them, and cutting off the Germans from the Belgium ports which were used to launch U-boat attacks. The allies were actually mistaken in their second objective. The main infantry battle was supported by heavy use of artillery and air-strikes. Although Passchendaele was eventually taken the toll was catastrophic. Every 2 inches of ground taken by the allies cost a life. The result was a strategic allied victory but also a German tactical victory. Allied losses totalled some 508800 to the German 348300. The ground gained during the battle would soon be lost once more just months later.
