Description: The 3rd battle of Aisne, was known to the Germans as Operation Blucher-Yorck, a part of their Spring Offensive, also known as the Ludendorff Offensive. It was fought between the German empire and an alliance of France, Britain and United States between May and June 1918. It took place at Aisne, France and was a German offensive with the aim of re-capturing Chemin des Dames ridge before the US troops could arrive. It followed the previous success at the battle of Lys. Following a heavy artillery bombardment and gas attack the German infantry smashed the French and British, who had been commanded to stand together in front of their trenches during this. They reached Aisne in under 6 hours and by the first night had captured a further 15km of territory. However, supply problems, casualties, and the newly-arrived Americans, proved too much and the offensive was halted at the Marne, 56km outside of Paris. The allied and German casualties totalled some 127,000 each, the allied total including 29,000 British.
