Description: The 1st battle of the Somme was fought in 1918. It was initiated by the Germans believing the British to be tired after recent fighting and to break their army before the Americans could join in. The plan was simply to break through the allied and surround the British, forcing their surrender. The British had inherited a poorly defended line from the French with no fall-back positions, any attack would be problematic for them. The Germans advanced having used artillery to take out British infrastructure. In just one month of fighting the allied forces lost 328000, of which 236000 were British. The Germans lost 348000.
