Description: The 1st battle of Marne was fought between the German empire and an alliance of France and Britain in September 1914. It took place at Marne river, France and was an allied counter-offensive to attack the Germans who were over-confident following an early string of victories. As the Germans swept to envelop the retreating French army, the attack was made. The Germans were stretched and in haste to meet the threat, opened a 50km gap between the German armies. The allies poured through. Fighting was fierce esle-where but the threat of encirclement was enough to force a German retreat to the river Aisne. With the allies in slow pursuit, the Germans dug in just North of the river. The trenches were to last for much of the war. The result was a decisive allied victory. Total allied casualties and losses were around 263,000. Of this British figures were 13,000 casualties and 1,700 dead.
