Description: In 1807, Napoleon ordered the invasion of Portugal. The following year, the French entered its former Ally, Spain. Some local uprisings began but they were poorly organised and not co-ordinated. A British force, under the command of Arthur Wellesley, landed in Portugal with just 30,000 men. Through a series of tactical successes and the with the assistance of the locals, Portugal was re-captured. In 1809 Wellesley was made Duke of Wellington. It took until 1813 to capture Spain, uniting the Spanish forces and routing King Joseph Bonaparte. Much of this was also possible by the removal of troops to be used in Napoleon's disastrous invasion of Russia. In late 1813 the British were at last to reach French soil.
