Description: The battle of Trafalgar took place on the 21 October 1805 off the South-West coast of Spain. The French were amassing a huge British invasion fleet and army at the time but needed to distract the British fleet. The French commanders attempted a large game of cat and mouse with elements of the British fleet but thanks to the tenacity and seamanship of Nelson, the French and Spanish were eventually caught as they attempted to reach the safety of Cadiz. The result was a resounding victory for the British fleet. Although Nelson was killed in action aboard the HMS Victory, the result of the battle saw an effective end to the threat of French invasion and to Spain's alliance with France.
