Description: The battle took place in 1797 and was fought between the British and Spanish navies. The British, commanded by Sir John Jervis, attacked the larger Spanish fleet aiming to cut them in half. The second, and larger, part of the Spanish fleet made to escape but Horatio Nelson, seeing this, broke the traditional single line and engaged them head on. With such tenacity and Nelson's success in heading off the main body of the Spanish fleet, it resulted in a decisive victory for the British. Several Spanish ships were taken such as the Salvador del Mundo, San Josef, San Nicolas and San Isidro.
