Description: The battle took place in 1797 and was fought between the British and Dutch navies. The British, commanded by Adam Duncan, attacked the Dutch off the coast of Holland, north-west of Alkmaar. The Dutch had finally left port after months of British blockading (their intention had initially been to support the Irish rebellion), and Admiral Duncan seized the opportunity attacking in two columns. He led one of them, under the HMS Venerable with Vice-Admiral Richard Onslow leading the second columnn in the HMS Monarch. The British had the advantage in almost every category and soon completed their victory, capturing 11 Dutch ships and killing around 540 men. Only about 200 British sailors were killed. As a result, the French plan to support the Irish rebellion was thwarted and saw an effective end to the threat of Dutch naval power for the remainder of the war.
