Description: The battle of Paardenburg was fought between the Boers and and the British. The battle followed the arrival of Lord Roberts and Lord Kitchener after the defeat at Spion Kop. In response, the Boers abandoned their position near Magersfontein and moved back into the Orange Free State. As preparations were made to retreat by the Boers, the British cavalry lifted the siege at Kimberley. The cavalry division then caught up with the Boers and their slow ox train which forced them dig in at Paardenburg Drift on the Modder River. The main infantry of the British then encircled the Boers. The battle resulted in a win for the British, despite the retreat by Lord Roberts.
