Description: The first ship to bear the name HMS Foudroyant was an 80-gun third-rate captured in 1758 by HMS Monmouth, HMS Hampton Court and HMS Swiftsure. She was previously the French ship Foudroyant. In 1778 she captured the French ship Pallas. She helped capture the French ship Lively, formerly the HMS Lively. In 1782 she assisted in the capture of the Pegase. She was broken up in 1787.

In 1800 she captured the Annonciata (with HMS Minorca and HMS Queen Charlotte), the Genereux (with HMS Success), Guillaume Tell (with HMS Lion, HMS Penelope, HMS Minorca, HMS Vincenjo and HMS Strombolo) and the Hyppolite. In 1806 led by the HMS London, HMS Amazon, she captured the French ships Marengo and Belle Poule. They were taken into service respectively as HMS Marengo and HMS Belle Poule.
