Yeomanry

Below is a list of Yeomanry regiments of the British army that your ancestors may have fought for.

Theatres of War, Army Regiments, Naval Detachments, RAF

Description: Formed in the 1790s, they were volunteer regiments formed from yeoman, small farmers who owned their own land. They were usually cavalry regiments. They were predominantly used for the defence Great Britain itself. In 1901 they were renamed Imperial Yeomanry and allowed to go overseas. In 1908 they merged with the Volunteer Force, creating the Territorial Force. They were re-named the Territorial Army at the end of the First World War. With the changing face of warfare, horses had become largely obsolete and Yeomanry regiments were changed to other roles such as engineers, artillery or armoured roles.
