Description: The Machine Gun Corps was formed in 1915 with Infantry, Cavalry and Motorbike branches. In 1916, a heavy branch was added. The Heavy Branch crewed the first tanks and in 1917 split from the corps to form the Tank Corps. During the First World War they fought notably at the Somme (1916), Arras, Ypres, Cambrai, the Somme (1918), the Hindenburg Line and Selle. In 1923 they were re-named the Royal Tank Corps.In 1939 they were re-named the Royal Tank Regiment. During the Second World War they fought across all fronts taking part in the evacuation of Dunkirk, El-Alamein, the Normandy landings and the invasion of Italy..
