Royal Medical Corps

Below is a list of Royal Medical Corps regiments of the British army that your ancestors may have fought for.

Theatres of War, Army Regiments, Naval Detachments, RAF

Description: The Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) are responsible for the health of the British army. Initially, the British army used Regimental Surgeons to deal with injured men, with one surgeon per regiment. The Regimental Surgeon was concerned not only with wounds from the battlefield but with general well-being. This was stopped in 1873, when a medical service was set up for the army. Recruits had to be qualified doctors, but did not receive an appropriate rank. This complaint continued until, in 1898, the Royal Medical Corps was established. They first served in the Boer wars and subsequently in both the First and Second World Wars. Their nickname is the Linseed Lancers.
