Machine Gun Corps
Below is a list of Machine Gun Corps regiments of the British army that your ancestors may have fought for.
Theatres of War, Army Regiments, Naval Detachments, RAF
Description: The Machine Gun Corps was formed in 1915 with Infantry, Cavalry and Motorbike branches. In 1916, a heavy branch was added. The Heavy Branch crewed the first tanks and in 1917 split from the corps to form the Tank Corps. Originally machine gun units were assigned to each infantry battalion. The re-organisation involved creating machine gun companies per infantry brigade. At the same time, the battalion machine gun units were given light machine guns. The combination of the two greatly increased the firepower. They saw action across all fronts in the First World War. It was disbanded in 1922.
