Description: The Labour Corps were formed in early 1917 and by the end of the war totalled almost 400000 men. About 40% worked in the UK but the remainder worked on the frontline, often within firing range of the enemy. The Labour Corps were formed to take care of the massive physical effort involved in building and maintaining transport networks, communications networks, camps and stores. They were from infantry regiments, usually when they were no longer A1 fit. In 1918 they were used as actual infantry on the Western Front.
