Description: Formed in 1881 by an amalgamation of the 84th (York and Lancaster) Regiment and the 65th (2nd Yorkshire North Riding) Regiment. Recruiting ground was South Yorkshire, specifically Hallamshire, taking men from land owned by the Duke of York and the Duke of Lancaster. They saw action in the Boer Wars, fighitng at Spionkop, Valkrantz and Pieters and Ladysmith. During the First World War they fought across the Western, Italian and Turkish fronts at battle such as the 1st battle of Ypres, Loos, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Cambrai, Arras, Passchendaele, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), the advance in Flanders, Gallipoli and Vittorio Veneto. During the Second World War they fought across the Western, Norwegian, African and Far-Eastern fronts. Those who fought in Norway were taken there by the HMS Sheffield, forming a bond with them that remains to this day. They fought at battles such as the invasion of Italy. In 1968 the regiment disbanded. Their nickname is The Royal Tigers, The Twin Roses or The Young and Livelies.
