Description: Formed in in 1685 as the Duke of Norfolk's Regiment of Foot. In 1747 it was renamed the 12th Regiment of Foot. In 1751 it was renamed the 12th Regiment of Foot. In 1782 12th (the East Suffolk) Regiment of Foot. Some battalions were re-designated as part of the 65th (2nd Yorkshire, North Riding) Regiment of Foot and the 63rd (the West Suffolk) Regiment of Foot. During the First World War they fought at Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, Messines, the 1st battle of Ypres, the 2nd battle of Ypres, Loos, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Arras, Cambrai, Passchedaele, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), Lys, the 2nd battle of the Somme (1918), Selle and the advance in Flanders. They also fought on thr Greek front (Doiran), Gallipoli and the Middle Eastern front (Gaza). During the Second World War they fought in the Dunkirk evacuations, in the Normandy landings and also on the Far East front.
