Description: Formed in 1689 as Sir Edward Dering's Regiment of Foot. In 1751 they were renamed the 24th Regiment of Foot. They saw action in the Seven Years War. They saw action in the American War of Independence. In 1782 they were renamed the 24th (The 2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot. They saw action during the Napoleonic Wars, fighting on the Iberian Peninsula. They saw action during the 1857 Indian Mutiny. In 1879 they saw action in the Zulu War, fighting at Isandlhwana against 22,000 Zulu warriors and later at Rorke's Drift (made famous by the film, Zulu, starring Michael Caine). In 1881 they were renamed the South Wales Borderers. During the First World War they fought across the Western, Turkish, Far Eastern and Greek fronts at battles such as Mons, Marne, Aisne, the 1st battle of Ypres, Aubers Bridge, Loos, the Somme (1916), Gallipoli, Horsehoe Hill, Machukovo and Doiran. During the Second World War they fought across the Western, African and Middle Eastern fronts, involved in the Normandy Landings and Arnhem. In 1969 they were amalgamated with the Welch Regiment, forming the Royal Welsh Regiment. In 2006 they were amalgamated with The Royal Welch Regiment of Fusiliers, forming the Royal Welsh. Their nickname is Howard's Greens.
