Description: The Sherwood Forsters (Derbyshire Regiment) were formed in 1881 from an amalgamation of the 45th (Nottinghamshire) Regiment of Foot and the 95th (Derbyshire) Regiment of Foot). In 1902 they were renamed The Sherwood Forsters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment). During the First World War they fought across the Western, Italian, Turkish and Middle-Eastern fronts at battles such as the 1st battle of Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Bridge, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Cambrai, Passchendaele, Gallipoli and Vittorio Veneto. They lost over 11,000 men during the war. During the Second World War they fought across the Western, Norwegian, African, Italian and Far-Eastern fronts at battles such as Dunkirk, El-Alamein, and the invasion of Italy. They lost 1,500 men during the war. In 1970 they were amalgamated with The Worcestershire Regiment, forming The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment (29th/45th Foot). In 2007 they were amalgamated with the Cheshire Regiment and the Staffordshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's), forming the Mercian Regiment. Their nickname is The Old Stubborns.
