Description: Formed in 1684 Ireland by the Earl of Granard. In 1695 it was renamed the Royal Regiment of Ireland. In 1751 it was listed as the 18th Regiment of Foot. They saw action during the Seven Years War. They saw action during the Napoleonic Wars. They saw action during the Crimean War, fighting at Sevastapol. In 1881 they were renamed the Royal Irish Regiment. They saw action during the Boer Wars. During the First World War they fought across the Western, Macedonian and Middle Eastern fronts as battles such as Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, Neuve Chapelle, the first battle of Ypres, the second battle of Ypres, Gallipoli, the Somme, Arras, Passchendaele, Cambrai and the Hindenburg Line. They were disbanded in 1922 as part of the Anglo-Irish treaty. Their nickname is The Namurs or Paddy's Blackguards.
