Description: Formed in 1881 through an amalgamation of the 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment and the 108th Regiment of Foot (Madras Infantry). They saw action in the Boer Wars, fighting at Colenso, Spionkop, Ladysmith and Valkrantz and Pieters. During the First World War they fought across the Western, Greek, Turkish and Middle Eastern fronts in battles such as Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, the 1st battle of Ypres, the 2nd battle of Ypres, Festubert, Loos, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Arras, Cambrai, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), the 2nd battle of the Somme (1918), Selle, Passchendaele, Gallipoli, Salonika and the 3rd battle of the Gaza. During the Second World War they fought across the Western, Far Eastern, African, Italian and Middle Eastern fronts and were involved in the Dunkirk evacuations and the invasion of Italy. In 1968 they were amalgamated with the Royal Ulster Rifles and the Royal Irish Fusiliers, forming the Royal Irish Rangers. In 1992 they amalgamated with the Ulster Defense Regiment, forming the Royal Irish Regiment. Their nickname is The Lumps.
