Description: Formed in 1661 in Tangier, Morocco, as the Tangier Regiment. In 1685 they were renamed the Queen Dowager's Regiment of Foot. In 1703 it was renamed the Queen's Royal Regiment of Foot. In 1715 they were renamed the Princess of Wales's Own Regiment of Foot. In 1727 they were renamed the Queen's Own Regiment of Foot. In 1747 they were renamed the Queen's Own Royal Regiment of Foot. In 1751 they were renamed the 2nd (The Queen's Royal) Regiment of Foot. They saw action during the Napoleonic Wars, fighting aboard the Queen Charlotte, Russell, Defence, Royal George and Majestic during the Glorious First of June. They also fought on the Iberian Peninsula. In 1881 they were renamed the Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment. They saw action in the Boer Wars at the battles of Colenso and Spionkop. During the First World War they fought along the Western and Italian fronts at battles such as Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, the 1st battle of Ypres, the 2nd battle of Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Bridge, Festubert, Loos, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Arras, Cambrai, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), the 2nd battle of the Somme (1918), Selle, Passchendaele and Vittorio Veneto. In 1921 they were renamed the Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey). During the Second World War they fought in the invasion of Italy. In 1959 they were amalgamated with the East Surrey Regiment, forming The Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment. Their nickname is Kirke's Lambs or the Mutton Lancers.
