Description: Formed in 1793 as the 79th Regiment of Foot (Cameronian Volunteers). They saw action during the Napoleonic Wars, fighting in the Netherlands and West Indies. In 1801 they were involved in the operation to stop Napoleon in North Africa. With Nelson defeating the French navy at Aboukir Bay, the 79th moved along the coast, finally defeating them at Cairo. In 1804 they took part in the naval battle at Copenhagen and subsequently were officially made a part of the British army. In 1806 they were renamed the 79th Regiment of Foot (Cameronian Highlanders). In 1808 they took part in the Peninsular Wars and in 1815 were present at the battles of Quatre-Bras and Waterloo. They saw action in the Crimean War, fighting at the battles of Alma, Balaclava and Sevastapol. They saw action in the Boer War. During the First World War they fought across the Westerm, Italian and Greek fronts at battles such as Mons, Marne, Aisne, the Ludendorff Offensive, the 1st battle of Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Bridge, Festubert, Loos, the Somme (1916), Arras, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), Lys, the advance in Flanders, Passchendaele and Vittorio Veneto. During the Second World War they fought across the Western, African and Far-Eastern fronts at battles such as El-Alamein. In 1961 they were merged with the Seaforth Highlanders (72nd & 78th) (Ross-Shire Buffs), forming the Queen's Own Highlanders. In 1994 they merged with the Gordon Highlanders, forming The Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons). In 2006 they joined the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
