Description: Formed in 1674 in Holland as the Irish Regiment or Viscount Clare's Regiment. They were used as the 5th Regiment of Foot during the Monmouth Rebellions by King James II. They served King William III when he took the throne and fought for him at the Battle of the Boyne in Ireland. They saw action during the Nine Years War, the War of the Spanish Succession, the Seven Years War and the American War of Independence. In 1782 they were renamed the 5th (Northumberland) Regiment of Foot, primarily due to their commander, Hugh Percy, being 1st Duke of Northumberland. They saw action during the Napoleonic Wars, fighting on the Iberian Peninsula. In 1836 they became a fusilier regiment and were renamed the 5th (Northumberland Fusiliers) Regiment of Foot. In 1881 they were renamed the Northumberland Fusiliers. They saw action during the Boer Wars, fighting at the battles of Belmont and Graspan, Modder River, Magersfontein and Stormberg. During the First World War they fought on the Western Front at the battles of Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, Messines, the 1st battle of Ypres, Loos, the Somme (1916), the 2nd battle of Ypres, Arras, Passchaendaele, Cambrai, Lys, the 1st battle of the Somme (1918), the 2nd battle of the Somme (1918), the Hindenburg Line, Selle, Valenciennes. They fought in Italy at the battle of Vittorio Veneto. They also fought in Gallipoli, Egypyt and across Macedonia. In 1935 they were renamed The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. During the Second World War they fought across the Western Front, Africa, the Far East, Middle East, India and Greece. They fought at Dunkirk, El-Alamein and the invasion of Italy. In 1963 they were joined with the Royal Warwickshire (6th), the Royal Fusiliers - City of London Regiment (7th) and the Lancashire Fusiliers (20th) forming the Fusilier Brigade. In 1968 they were amalgamated with the Royal Warwickshire Fusiliers, the Royal Fusiliers - City of London Regiment (7th) and the Lancashire Fusiliers (20th), forming the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Their nickname is Lord Wellington's Bodyguard, The Old and Bold, The Shiners or The Fighting Fifth.
