Theatres of War, Army Regiments, Naval Detachments, RAF

Description: Formed in 1881 after an amalgamation of the 98th (Prince of Wales's) Regiment of Foot and the 64th (2nd Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot. They saw action in the Boer Wars. During the First World War they fought aceoss the Western, Middle-Eastern and Turkish fronts, at battles such as the WWI: 1st battle of Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Cambrai, Loos, Passchendale, Selle and Gallipoli. During the Second World War they fought across the Western, African, Far-Eastern fronts at battles such as Dunkirk, the invasion of Italy and D-Day. In 1959 they were amalgamated with the South Staffordshire regiment, forming the Staffordshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's). In 2007 they were amalgamated with the Cheshire Regiment and the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment, forming the Mercian Regiment. Their nickname is The Black Knots.
